2008/12/16
Wan Hai Lines held a press conference on December 25 in Keelung, unveiling and witnessing the historic moment of direct sea transportation across the Taiwan Strait. The unprecedented direct sailing service was restructured from its Keelung – Xiamen trade lane, which called Kaohsiung, Keelung, ISG, Xiamen, Hong Kong, and Kaohsiung. After the service re-adjustment for the opening of direct sea transportation, the port rotation has been adjusted to Xiamen, Kaohsiung, Keelung, Taichung and Xiamen.

Currently Wan Hai is the sole shipping carrier that has acquired the permit to run service string in the Greater China area and four service routes have been launched to carter to customers’ needs in this market from 1997 . This move has not only proved Wan Hai’s insight to business opportunities but also presented its determination in managing the Strait market. According to the direct sea transportation agreement signed at the second Chiang-Chen Talks held in Taipei on November 4, 2008, these four services are allowed to sail directly between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait without a need to call a third territory. The direct sea transportation will not only help shipping carriers to save considerable expenditures on bunker and port charges but also enable them to provide faster service to customers by shortening sailing time between the Taiwan Strait.

Amid the global economic turmoil, many industries are facing stringent challenges this year. Sea transportation is the driving force of Taiwan’s economy and Taiwan occupies a prime geographic location at the center of Asia-Pacific region. The opening of direct cross-strait sea transportation is expected to reduce Taiwan’s manufacturing and export costs, strengthen the competiveness of the Taiwan-based enterprises and induce more foreign shipping carriers to use Taiwan as a global logistics hub for joint sea and air transportation. Besides, it is also expected that via this kind of transportation mode, the shipping related business will be also encouraged.

Wan Hai has always been famous for its comprehensive service networks in the intra-Asia market. We think shipping is an industry that is highly related to business cycle. And Wan Hai is still able to create impressive performance even in the face of the economic recession. This has provided a vivid example that underlines Wan Hai’s capability in crisis management and risk diversification. Wan Hai will continue to commit its business philosophy “Customer First” to expand its presence in intra-Asia market by opening up new service routes. Also Wan Hai is continuing its leading edge in intra-Asia market by seeking more cooperation opportunities with its peer carriers.
